N95 masks are all the rage right now with the prevalence of Covid-19. So much so, in fact that sales of the PPE product surged 319% last month according to one report. With everyone buying N95 masks, it’s important to remember a couple basics when wearing them.
What is an N95 Mask Used for?
The N95 masks is an air-purifying respirator (APR) certified by NIOSH. They’re masks with filters that will cover your nose and mouth, and when they’re properly sealed to your face, they can filter out particles less than 0.3 micrometers. For an idea, the width of a single human hair is approximately 60 micrometers.
How Long Does an N95 Mask Last?
The shelf life of an N95 respirator is a standard maximum of five years from its production date, if it had been stored in the original packaging. When wearing it on your face and out in public, it is recommended to not exceed eight hours of wearing the mask without replacing or disinfecting.
It’s important to know, however, the N95’s can be reused at the time being because of a nationwide shortage of all suppliers. For instance, some supply chains are indicating that any order placed now for a box of N95 masks will only be able to be filled in the late summer.
